Two themes taken from the reference screenshots. Paper is a warm flat sheet — the app background and the pane surface are the same cream, so the panes stop reading as cards floating over a gradient — and it is what a new account now starts on: "follow the OS" resolves to whichever of plain white or plain dark the machine prefers, the two least considered palettes here. Dark is retuned rather than added, being the closest existing one: it was #111827, a slate blue that quietly tinted every surface above it, and is now a neutral near-black. A theme can seed knobs the way a layout already could, because the accent cannot come from the stylesheet — AppearanceRenderer writes --rgb-accent inline on <html>, which beats any [data-theme] rule. Both new palettes ask for a desaturated one: default blue on cream reads as a hyperlink, and on true black it is the one thing that glows. Dark also needed its own field tokens; .dark's #27272a field was the same colour as the new surface, so the search box lost its edges entirely. The mail row is rebuilt around the screenshots. An avatar whose colour is derived from the address and never stored, so it is the same circle for the same person everywhere; subject on its own line above the labels and snippet when the list is narrow, all three on one line when it is wide. Label chips are outlined pills with the colour in the border and text rather than a filled block plus a dot — a row carries three of these beside a subject and a snippet, and an outline annotates the row instead of competing with it. They show at every width now, having their own line to sit on. Also here, all found by looking rather than by reading: * The select-all checkbox bordered with border-field, which is the FILL token — white at 0.6 alpha — so it drew a white border on a white surface. The row checkboxes hardcoded gray-300 and blue-600 and ignored both the theme and the accent; both use tokens now. * The flat layout drops the shell's left padding so the sidebar's active pill can bleed to the window edge. Below md there is no sidebar, so it was the mail pane that bled — glued to the left with a gutter still on the right. Scoped to widths that actually have a sidebar. * The two pane headers derived their heights separately and were visibly two heights side by side. One --pane-header-h now.
